Who doesn't love a grubby Gothic church? Well I do at least, and doesn't it marry beautifully into the gloomy afternoon setting? It was lovely to walk in from this gloom into the soft yellow light inside. Just imagine lighting up that place with candles alone, way back when. Despite what these pictures may show you, the sun shines pretty brilliantly even in the Scandinavian winter, so I guess the windows would have snuck in a few rays. My particular favourites in the church were the crude (I say this in the least condescending way, if that's possible) little carvings on the pillars in the crypt, the zodiacal calendar and the beautiful, carved wooden chairs. It's just so impressive walking into a building of such scale. Look at what a few hundred years, blood, sweat, and no WorkSafe legislations can do.
Beautiful zodiacal calendar, annotated with saints for every day of the year.
Noah told me this is a sculpture of someone strangling a baby. Mum thinks it's more likely a giant and a human. Does look an awful lot like a baby though.
